While campers will be introduced to elements of the theme Olympic Sport throughout the week, the main camp activity will be gymnastics.
This week girl campers will be working on acquiring rhythmic gymnastics skills and boys will be working on their weightlifting abilities.
Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that originated from Sweden in the 19yth century where gymnasts perform on a 13m x 13m floor with the following apparatus: hoop, ball, clubs, ribbon, and/or rope. The sport combines elements of gymnastics, dance, and calisthenics. In order to graciously perform the routines, gymnasts must be strong, flexible, agile, dexterous and extremely well coordinated. The sport becomes part of the Olympic games in 1984.
The predecessor sport of weightlifting was the lifting of heavy stones in contests of strength, which was practiced throughout the ancient world. Weightlifting as an organized sport also has a long history and was included in the program at the very first modern Olympic Games, Athens 1896. Weightlifting may seem a simple sport, but it demands supreme physical and mental control. Lifting more than twice his/her bodyweight from the floor to above the head is not just about mobilizing every muscle in the body. To achieve this feat of explosive power requires absolute focus, superb technique, and a fighting spirit.
